Community
Pride
Founded
in 1904 when the railroad made its way through the area,
Munich prides itself as being "the cleanest progressive
town in North Dakota". Along with the surrounding communities
who share in this pride, Munich continues to enhance its
existing services, business climate and recreational opportunities.
Strong in its German and Scandinavian heritage, the community
was built on a solid agriculture foundation-located in
the heart of northeastern North Dakota's durum country.
In addition, there is a diverse retail base providing
more than 15 businesses, many of which are family owned
and operated. Munich is also the birthplace of one of
the longest serving U. S. Senators, Quentin Burdick.
Services
Munich
has an active ambulance and rural fire department, whose
members continue to upgrade not only the facilities and
equipment which they use, but also continue to become
updated on the latest advances in each specific area by
hosting or attending classes, workshops and seminars.
Munich is also home to a medical clinic, which is a satellite
facility of the Cavalier County Clinic. The Cavalier County
Health and Wellness program also provides periodic health
maintenance services at the Munich Senior Center.
Agriculture
Agriculture
plays a vital role in the economic structure of the Munich
area. In addition to the many family farms the are also
agriculturally based businesses and support services in
the area. The Munich area is known for its production
of durum wheat, hardwheat, barley, sunflowers and flax,
as well as other small grain crops. Livestock also plays
a vital role for some of the area's farm families.
Sports
and Recreation
Few would
deny that the heartbeat of the Munich community is often
based on the athletic and recreational activities that
are available throughout the year. Whether a person is
on the sidelines as a spectator or on the playing field,
the action is never dull. Munich has captured many state
high school championships over the years, including most
recently Class B titles in 1978 for girls' basketball,
1991 and 1992 for baseball, 1992 for boys' basketball
and also the 1991 and 1992 Class A American Legion baseball
titles. The community also supports summer youth baseball
programs from T-ball through the Legion baseball programs.
The city boasts a beautiful community park, complete with
a lighted baseball diamond, outdoor tennis and basketball
courts, playground equipment, a sand volleyball court,
horseshoe pits and picnic facilities. Bowling and outdoor
ice skating are also popular winter activities. Northeastern
North Dakota is recognized as a hunter's paradise. Hunters
from all over the country come to the Munich area to take
advantage of the excellent waterfowl hunting opportunities,
as well as for deer hunting.
Churches
Religion
is very important to members of the community. Churches
active in the community include
- St.
Mary's Catholic Church
- Salem
Mennonite Church
- Zion
Lutheran Church.
